Canggu area guide
Canggu is a stretch of coast and former rice fields north-west of Seminyak, known for surf, cafés, co-working and a large remote-worker community. It is busy and the roads are narrow, so pick your base carefully.
Neighbourhoods
| Area | Best for |
|---|---|
| Batu Bolong | The centre: cafés, nightlife, beginner-friendly surf |
| Echo Beach | Experienced surfers, sunset restaurants |
| Berawa | Beach clubs, gyms, families |
| Pererenan | Quieter, newer villas, still close to Canggu |
Getting around
Traffic is the main complaint, especially around the Shortcut road and Batu Bolong in the evening. Short trips are quickest by scooter taxi (Grab/Gojek bike). From the airport allow 40–75 minutes; see airport taxi prices.
Good to know
- Currents on the west coast are strong. Swim between red-and-yellow flags where lifeguards are present.
- If you rent a private villa, your host must report your stay to the authorities; hotels do this automatically.
