Ubud area guide
Ubud sits inland in the hills of Gianyar, about 60–90 minutes from the airport. It is the base for temples, rice terraces, yoga and traditional dance rather than beaches.
What to see
- Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary: forest temple complex in town, home to hundreds of macaques. Do not carry food or loose items.
- Tegallalang rice terraces: about 20–30 minutes north; go early to avoid crowds.
- Campuhan Ridge Walk: an easy, free ridge path, best at sunrise or late afternoon.
- Ubud Palace and Ubud Art Market: in the centre; evening dance performances are held around the palace.
Practical tips
Ubud's centre is walkable but hilly with narrow pavements. Temples require covered shoulders and knees, and a sarong is usually provided or rented at the entrance. Officers check tourist levy payments at popular sites such as Tegallalang.
