Uluwatu area guide
Uluwatu is the southern tip of the Bukit Peninsula: limestone cliffs, world-class reef surf and beaches reached by steps. It is more spread out than Canggu, so you will rely on scooters or drivers.
Highlights
- Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu): clifftop sea temple; the Kecak fire dance is performed near sunset. Long-tailed macaques here grab sunglasses and phones, so secure loose items.
- Beaches: Padang Padang, Bingin, Suluban and Melasti. Many involve steep stairs; check tides, as some beaches nearly disappear at high tide.
- Surf: mostly reef breaks for intermediate to advanced surfers.
Where to stay
Bingin and Padang Padang suit surfers, Pecatu and the main Uluwatu road suit those wanting restaurants nearby, and Ungasan and Nusa Dua suit resorts and calmer water.
From the airport allow 40–60 minutes; see airport taxi prices.
